The School meets every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Classes begin the second week of September and end the first week of June. It offers programs in Greek language and culture from Kindergarten to eighth grade. Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age by September 15th of the year of registration. During the school’s session, the 1st to 8th grade students attend two hours of language and culture, one hour of traditional dance and one hour of folk music and songs. Kindergarten students are also offered the four-hour program option which includes dance and music classes, in addition to the two-hour language/culture program. Recently, the school has instituted a new program of teaching the language as a foreign language for non-bilingual students who do not hear or speak the language at home. When the students reach the eighth grade, they attend the preparatory class for the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek – Regents, because they qualify and fulfill the criteria for the New York State Education department Regents Credit in a foreign language.

Philosophy

It is well known and universally recognized that the Greek language and culture played a very important role in the world’s civilization. The arts and sciences, as well as the importance of athletics, were highly regarded by our ancestors who founded and developed them in a remarkable fashion. It is very important to embrace our heritage and to make every effort to convey it to our children.

We encourage all parents to give serious consideration to enrolling their children in Our Community’s Hellenic School. Your children will understand the importance later in their lives and they will thank you for it.
