Hellenic School Program

Our Hellenic School offers classes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays during the academic year which typically runs from early September to early June. In addition to language development, students are introduced to Hellenic history, culture, customs, and traditions, and to the Greek Orthodox faith. The school was established shortly after the founding of the Church of Our Saviour in 1957, and it has continued to thrive thanks to our dedicated, experienced, and highly qualified teachers and administrators, as well as our selfless PTA and School Board volunteers.

Curriculum

Classes for Levels K–8 are held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Kindergarten students must be 5 years of age and Level 1 students must be 6 years old by December 31 of the year of registration.

Our students come from wonderful families with different backgrounds and proficiency levels. In order to enhance learning and meet student needs better, we reorganized our curriculum, created new student groups, and implemented a new school program. Two great features of this new program are the relatively small size of each class and the grouping of students according to individual linguistic proficiency level as assessed and recommended by the teachers. The classrooms are equipped with Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and white boards.  In addition, all our students benefit from 30 minutes of traditional Greek dance instruction and 30 minutes of music instruction.

The school curriculum has also been enriched with student research projects related to Greek-American history and trips to cultural institutions in the greater Metropolitan area. Our dynamic PTA organizes various cultural and educational enrichment activities that further enhance the educational experience of all of our students.

Students in Level 8 have the opportunity to take the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek. This test is administered by the Archdiocese every June. Successful performance may lead to granting of high school academic credit by the student’s local school district. Hellenic School graduates can sit for the Level A1, A2, and B1 Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek, also known as the Ellinomatheia exam, which is offered by the Greek government each May.

The School’s principal is the distinguished educator Demosthenes Triantafillou, who has vast teaching and administrative experience in Greek parochial schools as well as New York public schools.
